HOW TO CONNECT YOUR ANDROID SMARTPHONE TO A PC AND USE IT AS A MODEM

What good is an android smartphone when you can't enjoy the full benefit of your money. There are so many things in which an android smartphone is capable of doing that most people are not aware of. Using an android smartphone is the next best thing to using a PC.
In the absence of a PC, an android phone can be used to carryout most of it's functions ranging from typing of documents down to even developing websites and software. Although it will be unrealistic to say that an android phone can fully replace a PC because the android smartphone actually has some limitations compared to a PC.

One of the way through which you can fully utilize the potential of your android smartphone is by using it as a modem. Why buy a modem after buying an expensive smartphone when you can actually use the smartphone in place of the modem?.

Yes! android smartphones aren't only for making calls, chatting with friends and playing games. You can also use it as a modem. There are three different ways through which you can make use of your smartphone as a modem. They are as follows:

1. VIA HOTSPOT-WIFI SHARE.

Connecting your mobile phone via hotspot to your PC is very simple and can come in handy when your smartphone is some distance away from your PC. All you need to do is to turn off your system's Airplane mode/turning on the wireless connection.

Next, you to go to your smartphone and turn ON the data connection, then follow these steps; Go to settings>>more>>Tethering & portable hotspot>>wi-fi hotspot. Turn it ON and set up your security details such as Hotspot name and password, security type and number of allowed connections.

The images below will serve as a guide for you.

Now go to your PC and search for the name of your smartphone's hotspot which you have set in the previous step. When you see it, select it, connect and then input your password and that's all. You have now successfully  converted your smartphone to a modem.

After successfully connecting to your smartphone, you should see on the notification bar that your hotspot is active and you have one active connection.

NOTE: It is advisable to use a strong password that people can't easily guess in order to prevent outsiders from connecting to your network at will.
The more the number of connections, the more congested the network becomes and the slowing the browsing gets.
Every smartphone has it's own limit to the number of connections it can accept. Some 5 users while others 8 users.

2. VIA BLUETOOTH.

Bluetooth is one of the ways through which you can connect your android smartphone as a modem to your PC. Bluetooth is one of the most effective means of connection and communication between two electronic devices. One of the advantages of Bluetooth is that it can connect over a long distance but it's not as good as hotspot.

In order to successful connect your smartphone to your PC, both devices (the smartphone and the PC) must have bluetooth connectivity either internal or externally connected.

If they are both bluetooth enabled, then we can begin. Go to; settings>>more>>Tethering & Portable Hotspot >>USB Tethering. Then turn it ON just as it is in the image below;

Now, you have to download a software known as PdaNet to be able to do this. You can download it below;

Install and run PdaNet on your PC (It should be shown on the right bottom part of your PC screen).
Now open it and select connect internet (bluetooth).

Then, search for your android smartphone's bluetooth name and connect to it. After this, you can now start surfing the web with your PC using your smartphone as a modem.

NOTE: In order to avoid unexpected disconnection between both devices, do not take either of them out of the bluetooth range (too far from each other).

3. VIA USB CABLE

When we talk about connecting our mobile phones to our PC, the first thought that pops into our head is using a USB cable because USB cable is the most common way of connecting any mobile device to a PC.

But what most people do not know is that you can actually connect your smartphone as a modem through a USB cord to your PC. It is simple and the best mode of connection because they are been connected directly to each other through a medium.

In order to be able to connect your smartphone to your PC as a modem via USB cable, you need to have PdaNet install on your PC. Download it from any of the links above.

Now, install and run  PdaNet.
Connect your smartphone to your PC using a functioning USB cable.
Select the TRANSFER FILES (MTP) option when you plug in your smartphone.
On your smartphone, Go to settings>>more>>Tethering & portable hotspot>>USB Tethering. Turn it On.

Next, go to PdaNet on your PC (at the bottom right hand side of your PC screen) and select it.
select connect internet(USB) and if your device is connected to the PC, you will automatically be connected to the internet and you will then be able to surf the web with your smartphone.

Once connected, check your notification bar, you should see a notification telling you that you have one active USB tethering connection.
